Organic Building Facade
In this video, I’ll take you on a creative deep-dive into how I designed a building with an organic, flowing facade using Houdini FX and the powerful Voronoi Fracture node. We’ll sculpt geometry with VDBs to achieve smooth, natural-looking forms, then convert everything back to polygons for export as USD files—ready to be brought to life inside NVIDIA Omniverse, where we’ll apply materials, lighting, and atmosphere. This is just one of many ways to build procedural architecture in Houdini, but it’s a fun and visually striking method that blends math, art, and simulation into one seamless workflow.
What is a Voronoi Cell? A Voronoi diagram divides a plane into regions—called cells—based on the distance to a set of points, or seeds. Each cell contains all points closer to its seed than any other, producing a fascinating, naturally fracturing pattern that’s perfect for organic architectural design.
